But what really is “Hygge”?!

When the chill of winter sets in, it’s the perfect time to turn your home into a hygge haven. If you haven’t heard of hygge yet, it’s a Danish word that encompasses everything cosy, comforting, and snuggly—think soft blankets, warm lighting, and hot chocolate.

The best part? You don’t need to be in Denmark to enjoy hygge! You can create your own hygge zone in your very own home! Whether you’re after a cosy reading nook or a peaceful corner to unwind after a long day, I’m going to share some tips on how to create a hygge space that’s perfect for you.

What is hygge, really?

Let’s start with the basics. Hygge is all about finding comfort and joy. It’s the feeling you get when you’re wrapped in a soft blanket, sipping a cup of tea, or curled up with a good book by a warm fire. It’s about creating a warm, inviting environment that makes you feel relaxed, at peace, and happy.

Cosy, comforting and snuggly.

So, how can you bring this feeling into your own home? Let’s break it down into some easy and practical steps.

1. Create a cosy corner

One of the best ways to introduce hygge into your home is by designating a special corner for relaxation. It doesn’t need to be huge—it could be as simple as a comfy armchair by the window or a spot near the fireplace. The goal is to create a peaceful area where you can unwind, whether you're reading, journaling, or just enjoying a hot drink.

How to do it:

  • Comfy seating: A soft, oversized armchair or a cushion-filled nook is a great place to start. Add some throw pillows for extra comfort.

Check out Castlery’s Hamilton Round Performance Fabric Swivel Armchair for the ultimate in oversized seating!

  • Warm throws & blankets: Make sure you have a blanket nearby to snuggle up with. Wool, knitted, or faux fur options are all perfect for winter.

Have a look at Casa & Beyond’s Snuggle Sherpa Blanket for extra cozy vibes.

  • Soft lighting: Use warm-toned lighting. Lamps, fairy lights, or candles can provide that gentle glow that makes the space feel inviting.

Temple & Webster have a great variety of lamps that are battery operated, so no need for plugs and cords!

  • Personal touches: Add some of your favourite books, a plant, or a cozy rug to make the space feel like your own little retreat.

2. Ambient lighting

Lighting is a key element in creating hygge in your home. The right lighting can completely transform the feel of a room, making it warm, inviting, and comfortable—perfect for the winter months. Swap out harsh, cold light bulbs for soft, warm ones, and scatter candles throughout your space to add that comforting glow.

How to do it:

  • Candles everywhere: Place candles in strategic areas—on coffee tables, mantels, or windowsills. Use unscented ones if you prefer minimal distraction, or go for cosy scents like cinnamon, vanilla, or cedarwood.

  • String lights: Fairy lights or soft string lights can add a magical touch to any room. Drape them over shelves, along the walls, or around mirrors.

  • Table lamps: Opt for lamps with warm light tones. A low, warm lamp light is key to setting a relaxed, hygge mood.

Ikea has a huge range of cheap as chips candles and lights that could easily help you create ambient lighting in your space without it costing you a fortune.

Fairy lights can add such sweet, cosy feels to any room.

3. Curate a hot drink station

Nothing says hygge like a hot drink in hand, whether it’s tea, hot chocolate, or mulled wine (the smell of mulled wine in Winter is ahhhmazing!). Creating a designated area in your kitchen or dining room where you can easily make and enjoy your winter beverages can instantly elevate your hygge experience.

How to do it:

  • Warm mug collection: Have a collection of your favourite mugs, each ready for a hot drink. Choose ones that are large and have a comforting weight to them.

Robert Gordon creates the most gorgeous ceramics and homewares. Try their Soft Terracotta Check Mug / Cat's Pyjamas for a beautiful stoneware option.

  • Hot drink essentials: Keep your winter drink essentials close by—tea, cocoa, cinnamon sticks, and honey. If you’re into hot cider or mulled wine, add those ingredients to the mix as well.

I’ve mentioned them before, but The Tea Crowd has the yummiest tea blends and they look gorgeous too!

  • Tidy display: Display these items in a beautiful tray or on a shelf. Keeping everything organised will make it easy to create a warm, soothing drink whenever you need it. You could incorporate these items into your existing coffee or tea station and display some cute jars of cinnamon sticks of even dried fruits.

5. Add textiles

Layering your home with soft textiles is one of the easiest ways to create a hygge vibe. Winter is the season for cuddling up under plush blankets and sinking into soft cushions, and the more textures you incorporate, the more cosy your space will feel.

How to do it:

  • Layer Rugs: Place warm, soft rugs over hardwood floors to keep your feet comfortable and add some texture to the room. A chunky knit rug or a faux fur rug can create that perfect hygge touch.

Ruggable is my go-to for all types of rugs. Check out their plush range here.

  • Blankets Everywhere: Add a few extra throws to sofas, chairs, or beds. The idea is to make it easy to snuggle up and stay warm.

Adairs for the win on this one!

  • Cushions & Pillows: Fill your sofa with plenty of cushions in various fabrics—velvet, wool, and linen are all great options for winter. Mix and match for an inviting, layered look.

I have to go boujee on this one peeps, West Elm has the most amazing variety for cushions. Definitely worth the investment.

Creating hygge zones in your home doesn’t require a big budget or major changes—it’s all about creating small, intentional spaces where you can relax, unwind, and embrace the simple pleasures of life. From cosy corners and soft lighting, you can create a peaceful and inviting atmosphere that will make your home feel like a warm winter retreat.

Now go ahead—snuggle up, light a candle, and enjoy your cosy space. Winter’s here, and it’s the perfect time to turn your home into a hygge haven.
