Spring refresh ideas for a busy person
There’s something about spring that makes me want to throw open every window, move the furniture around and suddenly decide that this is the weekend I’m finally going to organise that cupboard.
You know the one…
But when I say “spring cleaning”, I’m not talking about spending an entire weekend pulling every cupboard, drawer and wardrobe apart. We have lives to live!
Instead, a little spring decluttering, some cleaning and a few simple changes can make your home feel lighter, fresher and more enjoyable to live in, without buying a whole new room of furniture.
So if you're looking for easy spring cleaning tips that won't take over your entire weekend, here are eight places to start:
1. Clear your surfaces
Start with the surfaces you see every day.
Your kitchen bench. Coffee table. Bedside table. Bathroom counter.
Take everything off and ask yourself: does this actually need to live here?
Put away the things that have found their way into the wrong room, return items to their homes and give everything a good clean before putting anything back.
You might be surprised how much calmer a room feels when there’s a little more breathing space.
And you don't need to create a completely minimalist home. This is about editing, not stripping your personality out of the room.
2. Tackle one “doom zone”
We all have one.
The drawer full of random cables. The cupboard where things get shoved when someone is coming over. The basket that somehow contains approximately 47 unrelated objects.
Pick one.
Empty it completely and sort everything into three categories:
Keep.
Move somewhere else.
Get rid of.
Then put the things you're keeping back in a way that makes sense.
And here's the important part: stop there.
You don't have to spend the entire day organising your house. One small area can be enough to make you feel like you've achieved something.
3. Clean your windows
This might not be the most exciting job on the list, but it makes a surprisingly big difference.
Clean windows let more natural light into your home, which is particularly lovely as we head into the brighter months.
While you're at it, give your mirrors a good clean too. A streak-free mirror and sparkling windows can make a room feel instantly fresher.
It's one of those jobs you don't necessarily notice until you've done it and then wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I just did this a few weeks ago and I cannot tell you how surprisingly satisfying it was to do!
4. Give your wardrobe a little edit
Spring is a great time to take a look at what you actually wear.
Pull out anything you haven't worn in the last year and ask yourself why.
Does it fit?
Is it comfortable?
Do you still like it?
Would you buy it again today?
If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go.
The same principle applies to your home.
We often hold onto things because we've always had them, not because they're still useful or meaningful. A seasonal reset is a good opportunity to ask whether the things around you still belong in the life you're living now.
5. Refresh your soft furnishings
This is where a spring home refresh can start to feel a little more fun.
You don't need to go shopping.
Instead, have a look at the textiles you already own.
Could you pack away the heavier winter throws? Swap a cushion from another room? Wash your cushion covers? Air out your rugs? Give your curtains a clean if they're due?
Even simply rearranging your existing textiles can change the feel of a room.
Before you buy something new, see what you can do with what you already have. You might have more options than you think.
6. Don't forget the fridge
Okay, this isn't particularly glamorous, but hear me out.
Empty the fridge, wipe down the shelves and check those jars lurking at the back.
Then put everything back in a way that makes sense for how you actually use your kitchen. And while you're there, check the pantry too.
A little bit of editing can make everyday tasks easier, and there's something very satisfying about opening a clean, organised fridge.
Bonus points for finally throwing out the sauce that expired approximately 14 months ago.
7. Clean the things you forget about
When we clean, we tend to focus on the obvious things.
Floors. Benches. Bathrooms.
But what about the things we look straight past every day?
Ceiling fans.
Light fittings.
Lampshades.
Air vents.
Skirting boards.
The tops of cupboards.
They're not exactly the glamorous part of spring cleaning, but they can make a noticeable difference.
And while you're cleaning your light fittings, take a moment to think about the lighting in each room too. Are you relying entirely on overhead lighting? Could a lamp create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere? Anyone else have a rule of “no big lights” at home?!
Sometimes a spring home refresh isn't just about cleaning what you already have. It's about noticing how your home actually feels.
8. Walk through your home with fresh eyes
This is my favourite one.
Rather than looking at your home as a list of jobs that need doing, walk through each room as though you're seeing it for the first time. Ask yourself:
What feels cluttered?
What isn't being used?
What could be moved?
What isn't working as well as it could?
What do I love?
You might discover that the chair that's always in the way would work better somewhere else. Or that the artwork you've stopped noticing would look fantastic on another wall.
You might even realise that the room you thought needed a complete makeover simply needed a little editing.
A spring refresh doesn't have to mean a new home
I think we can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that refreshing our homes means buying something new. New cushions. New artwork. New furniture. New everything.
But before you reach for your credit card, try looking at your home with fresh eyes. What can you remove? What can you rearrange? What can you clean? What can you repurpose?
Good design isn't always about adding more. Sometimes it's about making better use of what you already have.
So this spring, don't feel like you need to tackle the whole house in one giant weekend.
Clear a surface.
Sort a drawer.
Open a window.
Move something around.
And enjoy the feeling of a home that's had a little reset.
Happy spring!
Love Em
